Safety Officer

The Safety Officer will be responsible for offering advisory services to management on all Health, Safety and Environment issues.

These include and not limited to the following range of specialist areas; fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise, safeguarding machinery and occupational diseases.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing and ensuring implementation of health and safety strategies and developing internal policies.
  • Implementing the company Health and Safety Procedures and developing local work procedures to comply with legal obligations.
  • Carrying out job safety analyses and considering how risks can be reduced or eliminated.
  • Carrying out regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented and are working well.
  • Overseeing safety audits and keeping records of inspections’ findings and producing reports that suggest improvements.
  • Ensuring that staff is inducted according to the Safety Procedure.
  • Keeping up to date with new legislation and maintaining a working knowledge of all environmental, health and safety legislation and any developments in the industry, and liaising with regulatory bodies to ensure compliance.
  • Maintaining a system for recording, reporting and investigating injuries, accidents and dangerous occurrences in the site.
  • Providing regular statistical summaries to Management and drawing attention to significant trends and occurrences.
Requirements
  • Degree in Environmental Sciences.
  • Professional Certification in Occupational Health & Safety.
  • Proven record of at least 4 years HSE experience in a reputable organisation.
  • Flexibility to varying working hours.
  • Customer service oriented.
  • A mature individual with high level of discretion and unquestionable integrity.
Workshop Foreman (Heavy Equipment Workshop) 

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for maintenance of heavy equipment. This includes and not limited to the following makes; Komatsu, CAT, Volvo and Hitachi.
  • Ensure full utilisation of workshop available labour and resources to achieve planned operationaltargets.
  • Supervise subordinates to produce quality work.
  • Assist the staff technically and train them.
  • Ensure that the technicians carry out the jobs within the allotted time.
  • Ensure the most effective use of available time and equipment.
  • Give practical assistance, on-the-job training and technical advice to subordinates.
Requirements
  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Automotive Option will be an added advantage).
  • Proven record of at least 8 years in maintenance of heavy equipment of which 4 are at a supervisory level.
  • Leadership skills.
  • Flexibility to varying working hours.
  • Customer service oriented.
  • Effective communicator.
Carmix Operator 

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the proper mix delivery and proper slump of concrete from the car mixer.
  • Ensuring timely delivery to sites.
  • Inspect the inside of car mixer drum on a daily basis to ascertain excess buildup and/or worn fins and report any deficiencies to the supervisor.
  • Maintain the car mixer in a safe operating condition and report any mechanical problems immediately to the supervisor.
Requirements
  • Holder of KCE Division III or KCSE mean grade of C- (minus).
  • At least 3 years relevant experience in driving a mixer truck.
  • A clean driving record.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Reliable with high level of integrity.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Position: Field Assistant, Kenya Life Panel Survey Tracking Project

About Innovations for Poverty Action: Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is a non-profit research organization that creates and evaluates approaches to solving development problems and disseminates
 
information about what works and what does not to policymakers, practitioners, investors and donors around the world.

Description of Work:
The Field Assistants will assist the Kenya Life Panel Survey (KLPS) Tracking team.

Activities include administering surveys to individuals and households, meeting with teachers, ligurus, and relatives to locate respondents, and traveling to those areas in order to interview individuals.

Netbooks will be used to administer the surveys.

Most of the work in this project will be Nairobi-based, but some interviews will take place in other locations in Eastern province, Coast and Rift Valley.

Visiting these respondents can include taking public transport, bodaboda, boats and walking long distances.

Carrying out these interviews can involve staying away from Nairobi at hotels in distant locations for several weeks at a time.

Working outside of standard business hours either in the morning or evening or on weekends is sometimes necessary as well.

Other tasks include taking anthropometric measurements, taking hemoglobin levels, organizing data in the field, office based matching of ID lists, compilation of survey information, photocopying, translation between Kiswahili and English and any other tasks needed to make the project run effectively or assigned by a supervisor.

Work duration:
Successful applicants will initially be hired for a two-week training period.

Those who demonstrate consistent exceptional abilities and work performance may be considered for a more long term placement, with the same project.

Academic Qualifications:
Candidates must have obtained a college diploma or university degree, preferably in sociology, statistics, economics, education, development studies, social sciences, health, or related fields.

Professional/Technical Skills:
    * Skills in data collection and survey administration;
    * ability to work with local administrators are required.
    * Training in taking anthropometric measurements is preferred.
    * Computer knowledge and typing skills required.
    * Experience in electronic data collection preferred.
 

Other Qualities and Attributes:
    * Most importantly a positive attitude towards the position;
    * able to work in rural settings;
    * comfortable interviewing people in their homes;
    * comfortable taking measurements of children and adults;
    * comfortable traveling for extended periods of time;
    * well-organized; ability to work independently and in a team in the field;
    * promptness; attention to detail;
    * initiative.
 

Candidates must be fluent in Kiswahili and English. Luhya and Luo speakers preferred.
